 The
Segway™ Human Transporter is a revolutionary new mode
of personal transportation developed and manufactured by Segway,
LLC of Manchester, New Hampshire.
The Segway™ is the brainchild of legendary inventor
Dean Kamen, and was developed at a cost of over $100 million,
over a 10-year period. It is the first two-wheeled, computer-controlled,
self-balancing, electric-powered, transportation device ever
produced.
Numerous studies and trials by businesses and government
agencies have proven the Segway’s™ ability to
dramatically improve productivity in any endeavor where employees
must traverse long distances, inside or outside, to perform
their jobs.
It gives workers the ability to carry more, and move faster,
with greater maneuverability, thus significantly increasing
productivity.
Although the technology is very complicated, the Segway™
works essentially the way humans do. When you want to walk
forward, you lean your body forward (initiating what engineers
call a “controlled fall”), and then move your
legs to keep your body upright and moving forward. When you
stop leaning, your legs stop working, and you stop moving.
The farther forward you lean, the faster you can walk.
With the Segway™, when you want to move forward, you
simply lean forward and the dynamic stabilization system takes
over as your inner ear’s balancing mechanism. With over
100 calculations per second by its onboard computers, gyroscopes,
and tilt sensors, the Segway™ tells its two electric
motors to precisely rotate the wheels to keep you upright
and moving forward.
When you want to stop, you lean back into your normal standing
position. When you want to go backwards, you simply lean backwards.
Turns are accomplished by rotating the steering grip at your
left hand. There is no accelerator and no brakes.
The overall effect is a remarkably intuitive transportation
device with incredible maneuverability, safety, and speed.
While the Segway™ is fun to operate, it has been designed
specifically as a serious mode of transportation and productivity
tool, not as a toy.
