  Laws

If you decide to rent a Segway™, it is entirely your responsibility to determine where it is legal to operate in your area. Here are some guidelines:

  1. Segways™ can be used on private property in all 50 states, indoors or outdoors, with the owner’s permission.

  2. As of May 2005, 40 states have enacted legislation to permit the use of Segways™ (often referred to as “Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices” or “Personal Motorized Mobility Devices”) on sidewalks, bike paths, and certain roads. These laws vary in detail from state to state. For example, a few states stipulate a minimum age (none greater than 16 years old) and a few require helmets for younger riders (none greater than 18 years old) on certain public ways. Be aware that even though a state may have enacted permissive, statewide Segway™ legislation, certain localities may modify or void these laws. This is rare, but it does happen (i.e. in San Francisco, CA). If you plan to ride your Segway™ rental on public ways, please check with the appropriate authorities for any prohibitions. The list below enumerates states that have enacted permissive legislation. Click on a state to view the actual law:
